Master of the course – best technology to measure distance

With many options out there for knowing how far you are away from your intended target in golf, we will explore GPS and Laser technologies which are used by most golfers across the world to see which is best for you!

Using devices during your game

I think its important to consider the moments when you will use these distance measuring devices. In this guide i wont be considering accuracy / quality of each type of product, i will assume that all devices work as intended. for my opion on specific products please have a look at my GPS reviews and Laser Range Finder reviews

Using a measurement device during different scenarios

There are considerations for using a distance measuring device for many scenarios while playing golf.

Par 4s / Par 5s Tee shots

In this shot type you are essentially looking to see where your tee shot will go.

  • hazards
  • hole shape will we run out of fairway
  • total distance of hole.

Approach shots and Par 3 tee shots

This is the same as any other approach shot really, you are looking for distance to the green and hazards to avoid so i wiIl

Layups

there are 2 main reasons to layup, the green is out of reach for you or there is to much risk associated to the shot due to your lie or hazards on the course. with this in mind I am looking for easy access to to the following information while

  • final distance to hole after a layup, so you can give yourself the best opportunity on that next shot.
  • understanding the cover distance of a hazard and the distance to the hazard

short game (100 yards and under)

this is the same as any other approach shot really, you are looking for distance to the green and and hazards to avoid so i will

Pros and Cons of a GPS

Pros

  • Quicker
  • Less Intrusive
  • Less chance of error

Cons

  • can be uncomfortable on wrist for some
  • Battery needs recharging
  • Distances are to green location and not Pin on the day
  • Can be fiddly to understand distances to hazards or other features of the course

Our recommended GPS golf watch is the Garmin Approach S12 with its affordable price, it really does all the essentials well.

Pros and Cons of laser range finder

Pros

  • You can be very selective about what you want to measure distance too.
  • Gives you accurate yardage to Pin not just front, middle and back.

Cons

  • Can be slower
  • More chance of error
  • Can be difficult if you have poor eyesight or suffer with colour blindness

Our recommended Laser Range Finder is the Shot Scope Pro L2 with its great balance of features for its price.

conclusion

I have both which is the best of both worlds. However, i find myself rarely going for the laser range finder as I am not looking for the level of accuracy for the Pin distance that others may need. I have learned to be comfortable with front, middle and back green yardage and using my eyes to consider the pin location and strategic approach I will take when shooting for it considering the other risks that exist around the green.
